Technology
In the new era kids are basically growing up with technology. It
is not like the olden days where our parents were taught on chalk boards and had
to use chalk to write. Schools now have smart boards where teachers can control
learning by using their fingers. Some would say that the new technology would
help kids learn faster, because it is all hands on and they would want to engage
in the learning activities. Others, who are not for technology, would say too
much of it is unhealthy. What happened to writing letters, now there are emails.
What happened to solving math problems with pen and paper, or using your head to
solve problems? Now there are calculators to think for people. Dyson said it
well, “We are living longer and thinking shorter.”
For a school to get rid of textbooks, and replace them with IBook’s from
apple are a little extreme. Source A said that school officials of Empire High
School in Arizona said that they believe the electronic materials will get
students more engaged in learning. 340 students with IBook’s, is risky when the
professor is teaching how will they know if the students are actually doing what
she wants them to do? For example if she is teaching and students are on a
different program than she is on, the students are not learning anything. What
this school has done is different from what other schools are doing, they are
changing what school should be about, which is having the students research
through books in order to find materials they
need.
If technology is going to run every school, students would not have to
think anymore. Now a days for multiplication problems students turn to the
calculator. In elementary school they teach you the times tables so that
students would not forget it, because they knew it would be needed later on in
life. Teachers are you using technology now because they think it would be
easier for students to understand, but it is just like what source b says, “How
do you communicate with students today who have grown up with technology from
the beginning?” Teachers do not have to use only technology to teach, mix in
other ways that will help students ponder on certain things. Today students turn
to Google if they have a question instead of going to the library for research
and asking questions. We have new inventions that read and think for students of
today. If the old school way of teaching was included in today’s curriculum,
students would be a lot more articulate.
All in all schools should not be throwing out the old way of
teaching just because technology has improved, and can teach students. Teachers
need to take into consideration all the effects that just teaching students with
technology can have. Source b
says, “Even as we live longer, we seem to think shorter,” (and this is true, it
is time for students to open up our minds as students and stop being one sided.)
Source f shows a kid watching television and what is being shown on the T.V is
what is going on outside. Students and young children should start spending more
time outside instead of sitting on a couch all
day.
